This concept design was developed in 2022 as part of a collaborative Project with LAMDA. Written by Karel Capek in 1920 the play examines the rise and fall of communism and what the consequence of blue coloured humanoids taking over the world would be. Directed by Madison Gerringer.
In collaboration with the director the choice was made to set the show in the 1960s, due to a certain kind of romanticism that was decided on being a suitable backdrop to offset the unfolding tragedy. The romantic and overall positive attitude towards science and technology sinisterly coincides with ideological changes that the characters undergo.
In case of the "robots", as metaphor for the unreflected following of orders, a decision was made to change the visual appearance of the robots by using blue coloured bold caps and blue body paint to offset them from "humanity" and to give the robots a unified look.
The stage set has got blinds incorporated on stage left and right, which open or close, revealing the backdrops stage left and right to give an indication of location.
